Works well; looks great. But disappointed that these "Japanese" rice bowls were made in China. Should have called them Japanese-style, or Chinese, rice bowls. Great for serving Asian soups, or ice cream, or fruit salad.Very nicely designed and decorated.They are very nice. I want to order myself a set.These are beautifully crafted 4.5 inch rice bowls. They are sturdy and have a good weight to them and are glazed beautifully. Each bowl is a different design and makes it really unique but still look great as a set.These are easy to clean and wash, can be used in the dishwasher, and also work great in the microwave. Also the price is awesome, I would've expected a lower quality or thinner bowl, but these are definitely worth more than I think they cost.These are fun and beautiful bowls that complement my Japanese style dinnerware well. Handmade look. Traditional blue. Subtle hexagonal pattern on the outside brings a wonderful modern touch without seeming out of place. They are a bit smaller compared to other rice bowls I’ve owned, but this makes portion control easier. Made of durable ceramic. Easy to clean. Dishwasher and microwave safe. Made in China. At $4.50 ea, these are a reasonable value and seem pretty well made. Overall, pretty happy, no real complaints! 5/5 stars.These rice bowls are wonderful. I not only use them for rice but for ice cream too. I have a tendency to eat too large of a portion of ice cream and these bowls keep me real that I don't need that much. I was surprised though that it does hold quite a bit. I love the blue and white colors as that's my kitchen colors. But what I didn't expect was a wonderful surprise. On the back side of the bowl, it's faceted like my gemstones I buy for jewelry making. The faceting is beautiful, and I know you'll love that too. I would definitely purchase these bowls again!Traditional Japanese rice bowls often have a blue glaze on white. These bowls have a honeycomb texture on the outside and the traditional type of designs inside. They are particularly nice because the outside of the bowl is so beautifully finished.Blue and white pottery originated with ancient Middle East pottery in Mesopotamia and then it became popular in Persia and other Islamic countries. The color was said to imitate lapis lazuli (a deep blue stone found frequently in Afghanistan and used to decorate inlaid marble walls as well as for jewelry.) The pottery moved across the Silk Road and by the time of the Tang Dynasty, the Chinese were making pottery and porcelain with the traditional blue and white glaze but in a very refined, ornate design.The Japanese adopted the blue and white ware and later, folk art designs and mass production became available for the growing middle class.If you are serving a Japanese style dinner, fill these rice bowls, get some plastic red and black "lacquerware" for your miso soup and large ramen bowls can be used for stews and curries. It's perfectly fine to mix patterns.
