In most respects it works well, but if any piece of the toast or English Mufin gets dislodged it falls onto the red hot burner elements and continues to smoke until cleaned. It doesn't fall onto the pull-out tray so the only solution is to unplug it, turn it updide down and shake it until the burned piece is dislodged. This has happened several times in the last few months. It never happened with our 2-slice side-by-side Kitchenaid toaster we used for 8 or 9 years. The Kitchenaid model had a grid of heating elements on either side and it was all but impossible for anything to fall on it, and whatever fell would be caught on the wide pull out tray.Another downside with this toaster is when toasting two pieces of Orowheat bread. It's a single slot and the bread must be inserted end to end. At best it's a close fit, at worst they must overlap a little which is not ideal for even browning. .These may not be problems for many users. Most of the smoking problems were when we used English muffins we opened by hand as the vendor suggests. This would be less of a hazard with pre-sliced english muffins. And many bread loaves are narrower than the Orowheat brand we prefer. I bought this because i liked the idea that I could watch it browning to decide when to pop it open. It is longer than most toasters so we couldn't orient it for fulll view so settled on a 45 degree view and enough to monitor the browning process. OK toaster but with some limitations. It makes good toast and the creme color I got is so cute. The only thing I don't like is the the side that you can see in browns less than the other. I figured that would happen, and accepted that fact before I bought it, so I'm not going to rate it less because of that.I've been using my new toaster for a week now. I LOVE this toaster!!! Looks awesome on my counter next to coffee maker and works great. Didn't think viewing the toast would matter but it makes a wonderful difference. Easy to clean and of excellent quality. I'm so satisfied with this purchase and would highly recommend. How often do you sit and stare at your toaster? If your answer is anything other than never, you may want to rethink your life. Seriously though, I bought this not because of the "clear view" gimmick but because of the tube style method of heating employed in this toaster. Similar to a toaster oven, properly implemented this style of cooking toast could very well be superior to the conventional toaster. Personal history making toast in a Breville toaster oven proved this notion. Or so I thought. Truthfully this doesn't really cook toast that well. It's better than a $10 Walmart special but doesn't come close to decent toasters by Cuisinart, Calphalon, Kitchenaid, etc, all in which employ old school heating elements. I expected more evenly cooked toast. I envisioned a perfect golden hue from end to end, with an even coloration on both sides. Instead this leaves blotchy white spots amongst ever changing shades of brown. Even on both sides? Forget it! Try comparatively undercooked on one side, every time, on every setting. Alas, we are left with the clear view gimmick as the only real reason to buy this toaster which leads back to the question I asked at the intro, how often do you sit and stare at your toaster?Holds two slices but love that the glass can be removed as well the bottom tray. Easy to use. The toasting seems to be slightly inconsistent when used back to back but i don't mind. Instructions easy to understandLet’s be real, we are talking about a toaster, a TOASTER! Why should anyone want to write a review of the most used and easiest to forget ancillary appliance you own? Because the Dash Clear View Toaster is that awesome! The short of it; don’t waste your time looking for anything else. This toaster can handle anything you throw at it with golden brown perfection, quickly. The Dash Clear View Toaster is the best bang for your buck, hands down! The long of it. We are a “somewhat” healthy eating family. We run the gambit when it comes to bread choices. Hardly ever white, mostly wheat for the kids, and tapioca and/or rice bread for the adults. Not all breads toast to perfection at the same rate. Each one of these breads has a very specific heat tolerance that can make for difficult toasting times. And that’s where the window really comes in handy. With the Dash Clear View Toaster you can sit back and enjoy the toasting experience all while watching the progress through its’ front window. Gone are the days of premature toast ejection just to check on the “doneness” of a specific bread only to have to reinsert the payload back into the heated bay. Visible perfection each and every time. With the white or Tapioca bread, which toast rather quickly, a quick turn to 4 gives us the perfect amount of crunch. The wheat bread takes slightly longer, about a 5 to a 5.5 max. And then there is the ALWAYS FROZEN rice bread. This beast of a bread (Food for Life brand) is twice toasted. Once as a 7 with “defrost” selected and a second plunge at a 7 without the “defrost” selected. AMAZING!The controls are easy to understand, clearly marked and simple to operate. Plug it in, place the toast in the slot provided, push down the plunger and away you go. It takes a matter of a use or two to figure out the proper settings to your liking. The “defrost” feature just doubles the time on the dial. The “bagel” feature only toasts on one side. With some sandwich breads like rye / pumpernickel etc. that have a tendency to toast really well and tear-up the roof of your mouth I like to use the bagel setting. Put the toasted side to the inside (meat side) and the soft untoasted side to the outside, you get the crunch without tearing up the roof of your mouth. AWESOMNESS!I have yet to use the “re-heat” feature … so you are on your own with that one. Sorry Charlie. As far as the toast rocketing from the toaster with the velocity of an unladen swallow, African or Eurpean – doesn’t matter, I have found that to be inconsequential. Does it pop up and sometime flop out on its own? Yes, rarely. But that has happened with my old toaster as well (a re-gifted 2 slice Panasonic that we got as a wedding gift 22 years ago). So really I kind of like the nostalgia of it when it does happen. BONUS! Let’s just hope that I get 22 years out of this amazing beast. So in conclusion, I just wrote an essay on a toaster. What the hell am I thinking?! Yes, it is that great. Click the “Add to Cart” button and get the Dash Clear View Toaster. You will not regret yourself for doing so, unlike your college spring break weekend. Love you son!The toaster came intact and in working condition. It’s a decent toaster. Our old one lit toast on fire so I might have a low bar right now. But it’s great to be able to see what’s happening through the glass. And looks cute too! This is perfect for my odd shapes of homemade artisan bread, so it does what I bought it for. No complaints. Our old toaster stopped working and my husband didn't want the same brand as the toaster always toasted unevenly and one side was dark the other light. So I watched reviews for toaster and this one was recommended by America's test Kitchen as the toaster with a reasonable cost. I have to say it toasts really well, even throughout and on both sides, it toasts fast enough that the bread is still moist on the inside. Love the look as well since you can watch your bread being toasted through the window. It's awesome. Just thought I would give an update, it's been over a year since we purchased this toaster and still works just as well as the first day. Would highly recommend this toaster.Cooks Illustrated recommended this toaster and I fail to understand why. There are several problems with it. First , it’s too shallow to take to regular slices of bread side by side upright; they need to to sideways and depending ont he loaf it’s a tight fit. You can clearly see the toast doesn’t even descend to place it equally between the lower and upper heating elements. Secondly, it does not toast evenly at all. Not only is one side darker, but it’s not close to consistent top to bottom. Terrible toasting ability and really isn’t that the only job we are asking of this appliance ? Either quality control is non-existent, or there are fake reviews here. Nothing else would explain the difference between the results that I actually achieved and the reviews and photos posted here. On level 5, white bread does not brown at all. A few brown stripes close to the heating elements at best. The window sound interesting but the inside of the toaster is quite dark and it’s not helpful. Anyway because the 2 sides toast inconsistently, even observing one side wouldn’t tell the entire story. After toasting nearly an entire loaf of white bread testing this machine , none of the pieces were anywhere near a consistent color. Oh and third, forget using this toast for 1 slice; it forcefully ejects a single slice with great gusto. It is the exact opposite of the motorized lift of say a leverless model.I’m discouraged that nearly every toaster has reviews that run from “best toaster ever” to “if you wanted to design the worlds worst toaster, don’t bother because it’s already been done and this is it”. Price does it seem to bear any affect on overall consistent quality for these small appliances.I went from a cheap $10 basic toaster to this beauty. It was the colour that drew me in and although I will lie to my friends and family about how much I spent on it I have no regrets.I’ve been using this toaster for a month and it is pretty good. I bought the white toaster for $52, whereas the same toaster in black was $90 on the day I bought it. Not sure why the price was different. The toaster feels solids and is not flimsy (maybe due to the weight of the glass), except for the cancel button/darkness selector knob which is a bit winky. The two quartz heater tubes do a good job toasting bread. Nothing spectacular – there is still unevenness, but the toaster performs as well as or better than any other toaster I’ve used other than the conveyor belt type toasters you see in hotel buffets. The glass panel isn’t as useful as you might think it might be at seeing how toasty your toast is because the infrared glare from the heating elements overwhelms the colour of your toast until your toast reaches dark brown. If you like “golden” toast you cannot discern golden from the glare of the IR heaters. The cord length is pretty good (41”). The toaster does forcefully eject the toast, and if you’re toasting a single piece of airy Wonderbread the toast will fly out of the toaster. If you’re toasting something more substantial then there is no problem. The bagel setting works fine and disables the rear element. For $52 I haven’t found a better toaster in any local shop.Toaster often toasted only one side of the bread. and you had to turn it over and toast it again ... which dries it out. I have been avoiding carbs so seldom use it but now the lever won't lock down. If I manually hold it down it will toast but only on one side. Have to flip it over and hold down again. On the bright side ... it was the prettiest toaster I ever threw away.Cheap toasters never die.
